Islands District is very different from urban Hong Kong Island. Transport varies from island to island: some places rely on the MTR and buses, others rely only on ferries. Two points need to be clear from the start: there is no shop in Islands District, and most outlying islands have no MTR station at all, so any description that presents them as directly served by the MTR would be wrong.

If you live in Tung Chung, the position is more straightforward. Tung Chung has its own Tung Chung line station, with public and private housing in Tung Chung town centre and Tung Chung North nearby, and landmarks such as Citygate Outlets and the Ngong Ping 360 cable car terminal. From Tung Chung you can connect by MTR towards Shek Mun, but it is still worth contacting the shop first to confirm opening hours of 12:00–19:00 and what to bring.

If you live in Mui Wo, Tai O or Discovery Bay, daily travel already depends on ferry or bus timetables. Mui Wo and Discovery Bay have ferries to Central, while Tai O requires a bus to Tung Chung or the Mui Wo area first. Carrying a laptop on a ferry and then through several interchanges makes for a long trip. As a guide, residents of these areas are better served by free SF Express pickup and delivery, with pickup and return at home.

Residents of Cheung Chau, Lamma Island and Peng Chau face the same pattern: take a ferry to Central Ferry Piers first, then the MTR via Admiralty and Tai Wai to Shek Mun. At Central, the piers are arranged as follows: Cheung Chau at Pier 5, Lamma Island at Pier 4, Peng Chau and Mui Wo at Pier 6, Discovery Bay at Pier 3, and Park Island in Ma Wan at Pier 2. Knowing the pier number helps you avoid the wrong pier, but for a repair, SF Express pickup still saves the whole ferry and interchange journey.
